Fanon is a term used to describe fan-invented canon, ie a set of fan fiction that is not officially sanctioned by the original creators.

Fanon can generally be differentiated from headcanon by the idea that fanon is a group creation which is changed, built upon and moderated by a specific fan community whereas headcanon is an individual creation whose sole proprietor is the original writer.

For example, in the world of Harry Potter, it is widely accepted fanon that Sirius Black and Remus Lupin were lovers, despite the fact that this has no support from J.K. Rowling.
